What is the History of Anal Sex?

Sexual stimulation of the anus and rectal area, including penile penetration, has been taking place for many centuries.

Research reveals that it is a common practice among heterosexual couples today, as part of their sexual routine. According to more recent figures based on 100,000 females:

  • 43% of the women had tried it with their partners at least once
  • 40 percent of those women enjoyed the act
  • 49% did not like it
  • the rest had no strong feelings either way or the other (Redbook Magazine)

Not all homosexuals have anal sex. Studies show 59-95% of male homosexuals had engaged in anal sex at least one time (The Kinsey Institute).

Why would anyone want to have anal sex?

For many people anal sex is repulsive, however some people love anal sex and find it a satisfactory sexual act, especially in gay male relationships. In the 1990's, anal sex has become more risky because HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is most easily transmitted by anal intercourse.

What is analingus?

A part of the body that some people enjoy licking, or having licked, is the anus. The anus is full of nerve endings in the pelvic region and many people find touching it to be sexually arousing. Performing analingus can be very risky as the anus and rectum carry diseases that can live quite harmlessly in your lower digestive tract, but which can be harmful in your mouth or stomach producing a variety of bacterial infections.

Does anal sex hurt?

Anal sex should not hurt if you do it correctly. With enough lubricant and enough patience, it is possible to enjoy anal sex as a safe and fulfilling part of your sex life. Some people may never like it, and their wishes should be respected, so do not force the issue with them.

How do you get pleasure from anal sex?

The physical sensations available during anal sex are uniquely different. The rectum is lined with nerve endings some of which feel 'good' when stimulated. The prostate gland can be a source of powerful pleasure and the ring of the anus can be a new and strong sensation to enjoy for a thrusting penis.

What do I need to have anal sex?

To take part in anal sex you need:

  • condoms
  • lubricants*
  • patience

*KY Jelly, a greaseless, odorless substance is the most common lubricant and is available at most drug stores. Other better lubricants include Astroglide, ID, Wet, or Foreplay, most of which are available at adult sex shops.

Do not use lubricants that are oil-based, such as Vaseline or baby oil, as they will destroy a condom long before you have finished having sex. Many oil-based lubricants will coat the lining of the rectum, providing a haven for many potential infections. Make absolutely sure the lubricant you buy is rated 'condom compatible', nothing else will do.

Why use a condom?

Always wear a condom. A condom on a finger inserted into the anus can aid lubrication as well as protect against scratches from fingernails and rough skin that could lead to infection. Even if both you and your partner are disease-free, you should still use a condom, as the rectum is home to lots of infectious bacteria that can cause burning and urethritis of the penis.

Is anal sex messy?

Anal sex should not be messy. A condom will help with cleanup. If you prefer an enema will help beforehand. You should always wash thoroughly before and after anal sex. If you use a vibrator for penetration, make sure that this is washed thoroughly too, in hot soapy water with a splash of antiseptic added.

What happens physically with anal sex?

The anus is a tight ring of flesh at the opening of the rectum making initial penetration the most difficult part of anal sex designed to control the elimination of bodily waste. The anus works partially by voluntary control and partially by reflex action to stimulation.

Your partner has to be able to relax to coax the anus into opening enough to receive the penis. It is important to go slow during this whole procedure.

  • Start with a well-lubricated finger.
  • Your fingers can flex and feel what they're doing inside the anus.
  • Slide one finger in slowly, letting your partner adjust to it. Take your finger all the way out, then push it back in again.
  • Give your partner's anus time to get used to this kind of activity, then slide a second finger in. Two fingers is probably enough but you have to take into consideration how big your penis is.

What positions are best for anal sex?

During intercourse:

  • Some women want to be on top to regulate how fast penetration occurs.
  • Some like to lie on their stomachs, or crouch doggy-style
  • Some like to be penetrated while lying on their sides.
  • Select how you want to do it before you start.
  • Take your time and use lots of lubricant.
  • If your partner complains it is hurting, then do not go until your partner is ready.
  • Eventually, during your lovemaking your partner's anus will relax enough to allow the head of your penis to enter.
  • If your partner is completely relaxed there should be no pain. Let your partner's body adjust and take your time.

Is it possible to get pregnant from anal sex?

It is not technically possible to get pregnant from anal sex as there is no way for the semen to get from the rectal tract to the vaginal tract.

Anal sex is still not a very good method of birth control as semen leaking from the anus after intercourse may drip across the perineum (the short stretch of skin separating vulva and anus) and cause what is known as a 'splash' conception. 8% of couples of who use anal sex as a method of birth control have pregnancies each year.

What about AIDS?

Unprotected anal intercourse is the single most risky behavior in regards to AIDS.

If neither you nor your partner are infected with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), you cannot get AIDS from anal sex. Almost half of American adults questioned in a nationwide sex survey (The Kinsey Institute) thought you could get AIDS from anal intercourse, whether or not one partner was infected, but this is not true.

The true facts are that anal intercourse with an infected partner, without using a condom, is the kind of sex behavior most likely to transmit AIDS. The sensitive lining of the rectum usually tears during anal intercourse, causing AIDS-infected blood or semen to pass directly into a sex partner's bloodstream.

Evidence supporting AIDS transmission from anal intercourse is so clear that doctors now recommend against having anal sex at all under any circumstances.

If you insist on doing so, please take two precautions:

  • The vagina is moistened by its own natural lubricants and is naturally elastic, but the rectum is not. It is important to use a waterbased lubricant like KY Jelly before attempting anal penetration.
  • For heterosexuals, it is very important to wash the penis thoroughly before entering the vagina after anal intercourse. Bacteria from the rectum is easily transferred to the vagina which may cause vaginal infections.
