The Spoons Position

The Spoons The Spoons

The Spoons position gets it's name from the way that two spoons may be positioned side by side, with their bowls aligned. The penetrative partner is often called the big spoon, and the receptive partner the little spoon. This position is very popular amongst couples and offers a great amount of physical intimacy between partners, allowing them to cuddle and caress one another.

This is a very nice position for the couple who like to fall asleep after sex, it is possible for the couple to fall asleep with the penis still in the vagina. The Spoons is great for people with hip problems or a physical disability because it can be very comfortable and allow for longer, slower penetration. It may be used for vaginal or anal penetration.

The Spoons position is great for women during pregnancy because the woman is comfortably on her side making it very restful for her in the last few months of pregnancy.

How it works:

The penetrative partner lies on their side, with their knees bent. The receptive partner lies on their side, with their back pressed against the penetrative partner's front. The receptive partner parts their legs slightly, with their hips tilted to one side, and their knees bent.

Both partners should be aligned so that the penetrative partner's penis is in line with the receptive partner's vagina or anus. With both partners lying on their sides, the man cuddles up into the back of the woman and penetrates her as she draws her knees up towards her stomach.

This position very intimate and the angle of penetration is great for either g-spot or prostate gland stimulation. If the woman angles her body down towards her partners feet while her partner does thrusting movements, penetration can be great.

The man has access to the woman whole body so he can reach around and stimulate her clitoris or caress her breasts and stomach. The areas of skin contact is extensive and this can be very romantic and sensuous.

Some disadvantages to the Spoons position can be:

  • penetration is quite shallow, and clitoral or anal pressure is not very intense without manual stimulation

  • there is not much visualisation of each others bodies

  • movement and leverage is limited in this position and penetration can be effected
